Posted by Michael on January 30, 2024 at 5:52 pm

The clutch went out on my Wife’s 2016 Magnum.

So I bought the Barnett Friction and steel plate kit to re-build her clutch (Barnett 306-85-40001).

On the box it says for “Victory 2001 & UP”. I did not buy the Barnett Clutch. I have OEM clutch basket and pressure plate, etc.

I just replaced the friction and steel plates.

Her bike had 25,900 miles when the clutch gave out.

We went out on a test drive today and for the first 60 miles she said it was running great.

Then the same symptoms occurred, high rpms and no power to the drive train. To me that means the clutch is completely slipping.

    1. Did I get the incorrect clutch kit? Should I get the OEM (Victory) friction plates and steel plates?

    2. Could this be a non-clutch issue? Something other than the clutch?

I bought two of these clutch kits as I plan on re-building my clutch as well (2017 Victory XC). I am only 3,000 miles behind her.

Both of the clutches are from the factory (original). We both bought our bikes new and are the only owners.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The number one reason for a clutch to slip prematurely is by using the wrong engine oil.

The number two reason is some sort of issue with the cable (or master cylinder) or lever, or adjustment.

The number three most common reason for a clutch to fail is abuse.

I never, never, never, never, use Barnett clutch kits. They are machined wrong and result in an incorrect stack height, which leads to failure.

Also know that the clutch size is very small in comparison to the bike. The Victory clutches have a TON of work to do. For example Indian uses a clutch that is double the size, for a bike that is smaller. So any little flaw in the Victory clutch will turn into “the straw that broke the camels back”.

Thank you for your quick response.

Should I just go with the OEM clutch pack or do you have a recommended one to use?

    Thanks again for your help.

You mentioned incorrect clutch adjustment. Obviously it can’t be completely sloppy but what are the side effects if the cable has too little free-play? I think someone has told me this may be the reason I have trouble finding neutral after the bike is nice and warm. Are they correct?

If the cable was too tight (no freeplay) the clutch would constantly be slipping (called: riding the clutch) and it would die soon thereafter.

So, sure, if your clutch adjustment is messed up somehow it could make it hard to find neutral. But you mentioned the heat of the engine and that it only does it when hot. That is generally because the shifter pawl needs replaced. So if you’ve agonized over the clutch adjustment, said to yourself “this has to be right!” and the bike still has neutral finding problems – replace the shifter pawl.

Scorpion clutches are big piles of shit. Throwing it in the trash will be the only way to rid your life of these problems.
