  • New to me 03 V92C Speedometer bad questions.

Posted by Brad on December 2, 2023 at 2:28 pm

Just picked up a 03 V92 with a inoperative speedometer, due to the front glass missing and being outside. couple of questions:

Does the speedometer unit keep the odometer reading in itself, ors it just a slave to the ECM?

Also, according to PO, the stator is bad (keeps frying batteries, will test it when I get it home). Are there any circuits in the speedo head thcould short out and create a bad stator or rectifier symptom?

And one last thing, this has a small fuel tuber on it, PO claimed it a Polaris unit. No numbers or tags on it. Just curious.

    Thanks

Update, tested the stator. Passes the continuity test to ground, and the ohms test between windings. I did notice the plug coming from the regulator seemed to have one of the leads pushed back, only two were seated correctly, unless this is by design. The lead from the stator seemed fine, a bit oily is all.

Picture of the connector on the regulator side. And a picture of what I was told is a fuel tuner.

You need to fix the pins on the stator. The harness side is probably bad as well. If you decide to replace the stator buy the high quality, high price OEM unit rather than the cheap copy that is sold as an alternative.

Oh, this was the regulator harness. The stator harness looked good. Was it a common issue for pins to get pushed back into a connector from misalignment when plugging in?

The pin on the left is damaged. Probably starting to melt from a problem with the regulator. If this was my project I’d throw that regulator in the garbage, fix the harness end, and plug in a new OEM regulator.

Any thoughts on a Mosfet or Series R/R instead of the OEM? I had an Aprilia and it was a recommended option for keeping the stator happier along with the R/R.

I do not, will not, choose ANY aftermarket voltage regulator currently on the market. I have not seen one that has any sort of quality. They are all cheap knock-offs that are looking to make a quick buck off of you.

Luckily, that is the harness coming from the regulator. Yeah, my butt clenched a bit with the term “OEM”, but after checking around, I’ve seen worse OEM prices…lol. While looking up the rectifier I found I can still buy side covers, painted to match, from Polaris. And only $354 (anyone who thinks that’s high hasn’t een inside a paint shop lately).

    Thanks again Rylan!

Replaced with an OEM regulator, all is well.
