There needs to be a certain amount of slop in the shifter. This is to protect the transmission from your foot inadvertently resting on the shifter and burning up a gear. So if your bike has maybe less than 50k on the clock, then it’s probably the normal slop. Sometimes on high mileage bikes the shifter and bushing do wear out and they need replaced.
