If the cable was too tight (no freeplay) the clutch would constantly be slipping (called: riding the clutch) and it would die soon thereafter.
So, sure, if your clutch adjustment is messed up somehow it could make it hard to find neutral. But you mentioned the heat of the engine and that it only does it when hot. That is generally because the shifter pawl needs replaced. So if you’ve agonized over the clutch adjustment, said to yourself “this has to be right!” and the bike still has neutral finding problems – replace the shifter pawl.
