Starter works but has a high whine sound.

Its either the bearings running dry or there a build up of rust between the stator and the armature core, the later happened to my 2012 XC took it apart, clean it, oiled the bearings and sealed the armature with clear laquer.
This I did 4 years ago and still running quiet after 35000 miles.

Yes, lube the starter bushings (or just replace the starter).
