  • Shocked at Recommended Repairs

I noticed a small amount of oil on the garage floor under my 2016 Victory Cross Country. I took it to the Indian dealer here in Daytona Beach, they did the last oil change. The result is the following diagnosis “Upon inspection tech found that the primary seal, shift shaft seals are leaking as well the OIL FILTER IS LOOSE. Tightened oil filter and checked oil level, fluid level is good indicates that leak has started recently. Recommend that when pulled apart for reseal stator is replaced as to guarantee proper seal and function.” I also noticed one of the parts they want to replace is crankshaft gear starter #1015167, when I asked about this they said every time they have replaced the stator this has been a problem because it’s designed to go in one direction and it ends up not functional because its doesn’t lock from going in both directions. My 99′ is still on the road and as far as in know with over 100K miles it has not had any major repairs. My 01′ Sportcruiser has 33K+ miles with no major repairs. My 04′ Kingpin has 123K+miles with only 1 repair throttle body shaft was worn and we replaced it. So I am a little bit in shock that I’m looking at $2100 in parts and 7 hours of labor for an oil leak. I rode the bike home ~10 miles and not a drop on the garage floor. Interesting that oil filter was loose and I wonder 1) If this is a mis-diagnosis 2) ride it till the next service interval and get a 2nd opinion. These days I don’t do any long trips just 100 – 150 miles so I’m tempted to keep riding it until another oil leak occurs. On the Cross Country forum a half dozen responses of primary seal and or shift seal so I was shocked to see those responses, most just replaced it themselves and dis-agreed with replacing stator. Any input would be appreciated.

There is absolutely no need to replace the stator and starter parts.

There is a difference between being thorough and just replacing things just to build the invoice up.

If The bike was leaking due to loose oil filter, you would end up having much more than just a drip. The shift shaft seal is more than likely your culprit and needs to be pushed back or changed if worn. This seal is notorious for sliding out over time, causing drips here and there. If you notice it BEFORE it draws to the back of the bike after riding, you should be able to clearly see it leaking on the left side of the bike coming from the shaft area itself. After pushing the seal in and cleaning the area, some have cut a small piece of semi-rigid hose (fuel hose) and snapped it in the exposed area of the shift shaft to prevent the seal from popping out again. Hope this helps!
