This one came in for a weird engine noise not too long after the engine and transmission were gone through (not by me). The engine didn’t really have a noticeable “knock” is was more of a subtle “loud engine” type of noise. A hint of excessive valvetrain noise, and an uncomfortable amount of piston noise. Just enough to say “that doesn’t seem right”. Based on that, I know how important oil pressure is to these bikes, so I stuck my oil pressure gauge in the block and, yikes! Zero oil pressure. I drained the oil and ran my scope into the block expecting to see a rag in the oil pump screen, but I was unable to spot anything. Then I split open the oil filter and it was a ticker tape parade of metal flecks, but no rag pieces. So it has me curious as to what happened inside the engine. Nonetheless, with no oil pressure, and tons of debris in the oil I told the customer we should be looking at a salvage yard engine. My experience is that the main bearings will be ruined after eating that much metal flake, and when the mains are ruined, the block is essentially ruined and the cost to replace is prohibitive. Best to just start fresh. R.I.P. original engine.
