  • 2023 season ending clutch loss

riding season in Wisconsin officially over for me. started with noticing a couple times of bike wanting to roll while clutch was pulled fully over the past few months. clutch wire tension was loose, any looser and the had to pull half clutch lever before it would be tight enough to pull the clutch at all. Today, couple times while “getting after it” it slipped at about 4500 in 3rd and again at about 4500 in 4th. another hour later it started skipping every 15min? just disengage half second to rev up, then catch again. eventually lost it all. Had to just keep shifting back and forth and bounce throttle a bit until it would catch. rolled through a lot of intersections and corners trying to not shift or pull in the clutch, but limped home for the 40 miles with it only dropping out completely about 3 times. Looks like I have a new project for the winter. 😞

Bummer. Make sure you’re using the right oil and the cable is adjusted correctly when it gets put back together.

Some of the fun I found. Clutch plates themselves were not bad, but basket and hub had serious damage.

Oh my, that’s a lot of destruction. What kind of mileage is on your bike? Did the clutch have a proper amount of freeplay at the lever before all these parts crashed into themselves? Sorry to ask but; what oil has been in this engine and what have been the oil change intervals?

Did the clutch basket nut come loose by chance?

about 52k. normal vic oil, nothing different. YES, the nut holding this all together was only about finger tight when I removed it. My first time in things like this so unfortunately I did not think to really check if the nut had backed off enough to let the whole assembly slide back away from the engine case.
