Is there a dummy version of testing the charging system? I recently purchased a 92C, 14,000 miles. It was stored for some time when I purchased it. Everything appeared to check out pretty good. However, after about 10-20 miles the battery dies and then backfire and die. Jump start works but won’t sustain. Only when I charge the battery fully will it run great for another 10-20 miles.

Looking for a simple…. Put a multi meter on such a setting. Put the leads on here. Meter should read….. just not sure how to make sure I’m diagnosing the best and correct way.

    1) You need a new battery. Letting it die and then jumping it is poor form. Just replace the battery.

    2) then when you have the new battery in place, note the charging output as displayed on the speedo display. You do this by pressing the button on the backside of the left handlebar switch housing to scroll through the options in the display.

Forgot to add, when I put a meter on it the voltage does not increase, stays at where the battery is when the bike is off, at 12V.

Has a new battery, still dies. I would like to upgrade the charging system as you have instructed. I can handle that. Until then I would like to ride it if I can for the summer since it is only a few weeks here in Alaska. I cleaned everything up real good and pulled the regulator. Have you posted a video on testing that regulator to see if it is bad?

Second, I may have identified an additional issue. The selector on the left side will not scroll through any of the digital settings. The digital display works fine, showing mileage, but cant change the information. I might have to pull the switch and check on that as well.

I don’t have a video on the regulator, sorry. The testing procedure is outlined nicely in the tech manual.

As for the switch on the handlebars, the switch contacts need to be cleaned. You can do this by taking the housing apart and sanding the contacts.

Got the charging system going! Thanks for the help! I look forward to all the other projects over this winter. The selector is still not functioning and the speedometer quit working. I have not opened up the headlight/cluster yet. Would you start there or other wiring first? The harness etc looks good visually and isn’t worn or dirty. But unsure if there are other places to check before I open that up and start following wires out of there.

The two must common things that would make your speedometer quit.

      1) the speed sensor went bad. This is easy, quick, inexpensive and available.

      2) the speedometer itself has gone bad. These are no longer made and would be a real issue if it turned out to be the case

Thanks again. I’ll start there. Do you sell or where do you recommend parts? I have been using eBay and Terry at Victory Only.
